4 Of Our Favourite Canadian Sustainable Baby Brands

What are you putting on your baby's skin? Ever thought about the chemicals in their clothes? Here are 4 Of Our Favourite Canadian Sustainable Baby Brands.

More and more evidence is showing that buying organic clothing for you and especially your baby is probably a really good idea. In many cases, conventional clothing is made from synthetic fibers including PVC, esters, petrochemicals, and in the case of kids PJ’s flame retardant chemicals, all of which have been linked to a number of alarming health-related issues.

So what should you look for when buying organic baby clothes?

It’s also important to mention that even natural fabrics can be coated with a concoction of toxic chemicals like:

  • Phthalates
  • Sulfonamide
  • Dioxin-producing bleach
  • Ammonia
  • Formaldehyde
  • Caustic soda
  • Sulfuric acid
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Halogens and bromines PVC-based ink
  • azo-aniline and petrochemical dyes
  • Urea resins

Now if you are buying baby or kids' clothing and are not sure, you can always look at the label, here are some examples of words you may see (and you will want to avoid):

  • Antibacterial
  • Antimicrobial
  • Moisture-wicking
  • Moth-repellant
  • Odour-resistant
  • Stain-proof
  • Static-resistant
  • Wrinkle-free
  • Permanent press

Your baby's skin is super sensitive and studies have shown that some toxins are present in their clothes, which can cause skin issues. Knowing all of this, we want to help you, we have rounded up our favorite Canadian sustainable baby brands.

Their Mantra: "We're redefining the concept of “new.” This means we’re eager to challenge the harmful effects of fast fashion, and to examine sustainability from every angle, and beyond. All of our products are made fairly and ethically in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where we select fabrics by hand that were originally headed for the landfill and turn them into bright modern garments. Our vibrant colors and designs are informed by the latest research in child development. And we collaborate with local artists to create original prints."

Why We Love Them: The concept of upcycling clothing to make new items is a pretty forward-thinking, innovative way to approach children's clothing. Since kids grow out of what they wear so fast, this is a good way to keep clothing out of the trash. They are reimagining sustainability and the concept of slow fashion.
