Why consider organic baby clothes for your little one?
Conventional fashion relies on large amounts of toxic substances throughout its supply chains, starting with raw materials. From the pesticides and insecticides used in farming staple fabrics like cotton to the petrochemicals and other harmful additives used to synthesize synthetic fabrics like polyester, conventional clothing is riddled with chemicals use.
That doesn’t even factor in the chemical dyes and flame retardants applied to clothing at the latter end of the manufacturing process. No distinction is made when it comes to clothing for babies or children, even though their skin and general constitution are a lot more delicate than ours.
That’s why it’s important to remember to wash all of the items of clothing you bring home, before putting them on yourself or on your baby. And to make sure to opt for organic and sustainable clothing brands wherever possible.
For that I’ve gathered some great brands making a conscious effort to avoid the pitfalls of conventional manufacturing practices, avoiding as much of, if not all of the toxic chemicals commonly used in conventional clothing processes. But first, let’s look into what I keep in mind when vetting sustainable baby fashion brands.
Shopping for sustainable and organic baby clothes can be tricky- Here's what to look for:
Just as I do for all sustainable and ethical fashion at The Eco Hub, from ethical pyjamas to sustainable men's clothing, I account for the same three criteria:
- Materials and fabrics used,
- Ethical sourcing, and
- Corporate responsibility.
1. Materials and fabrics
To start, I look for garments made of natural and organic materials wherever possible. When it comes to textiles, the most sustainable and environmentally friendly fabrics are usually organic hemp, organic cotton, jute, or linen. I also check for third-party certifications that verify the origin of these textiles wherever possible.
Certifications like OEKO-TEX® 100 test for azo dyes, formaldehyde, nickel, and other harmful chemicals, ensuring they are not present in the products I am choosing. Other similar certifications include Bluesign and the EU Ecolabel.
When it comes to organic fibers, the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the leading textile processing standard; factoring in ecological and social criteria for every step of the supply chain. Similar certifications include the Fair Trade certification, the Organic Content Standard (OCS), and the USDA-Certified Organic certification.
While I try to avoid synthetic materials like elastane, ethically produced semi-synthetic fabrics or fabrics made of recycled plastics like bamboo viscose, TENCEL™Modal, TENCEL™ Lyocell, or recycled polyester are also okay.
For semi-synthetics like modal and lyocell look for the TENCEL™ brand where possible. The TENCEL™ brand is trusted and only uses the best production methods, where these synthetic fibers still require harsh chemicals that must be carefully handled to avoid harm to workers and to the environment. Other relevant certifications include the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification and the Recycled Claim Standard.
I also factor in other materials by looking for natural buttons made from coconuts and tag nuts, recycled buttons, recycled zippers, or products that completely omit small metallic/non-recyclable inputs altogether.
2. Ethical sourcing
Ethical sourcing considers where and how the raw materials and final product are made and assembled. I make sure that the brands I choose make their products from sustainable materials, sourced from certified manufacturers that pay workers fairly and ensure safe and healthy working conditions. Their clothing should also be dyed, sewn, and finished using sustainable practices, under similarly fair, safe, and healthy working conditions.
Wherever possible, it is also best if all of these materials and processes are sourced as near to me as possible. Since I am located in Canada, the best thing would be for the materials and labor to come from either the US or Canada.
3. Corporate responsibility
Corporate sustainability demonstrates just how committed a given brand is to sustainability. So here I look for what more they are doing beyond sustainable fabrics and ethical sourcing? Do they promote environmental sustainability throughout their company? Are they offsetting their carbon footprint? Are they shipping their products entirely plastic-free? Are they a Certified B Corporation? Do they take good care of their employees beyond what is expected?
Good practices like this show just how much the brand cares, and are a good indication of its values.
