What is a zero waste online store?

A zero waste online store offers consumers products that are reusable, refillable, recyclable, or returnable. All the products are plastic-free and help people reduce their waste. You will typically find things like beeswax wraps, safety razors, shampoo bars, unpaper towels, stainless steel straws and containers, silicone storage bags for food, reusable makeup wipes, and sanitary pads, and much more. Some of the items you find can be composted and are biodegradable.

The best Zero Waste online stores

The following three zero waste online stores are based in the USA, but all ship to Canada.

1. Juturna Studios

The name says it all! Juturna means "the goddess of pure water, springs, and fountains", the founders chose this name because they share a passion for reducing plastic pollution and chemical pollutants in the ocean. They do so by offering a wide range of healthful items from eco-friendly everyday products to natural skincare and natural hair care products like shampoo and conditioner bars.

Love their curation of zero waste and reusable home necessities, Juturna Studios has everything you need at a great price. You can browse by category and even search for something specific like dish soap, which by the way is one of their superhero products. It's vegan and considered the best "multi-purpose kitchen cleaner for your entire home."

Handmade in San Francisco with just a few natural ingredients, pair it with their Natural Organic Loofah Dishwashing Sponge, dishcloths, or natural brushes and sponges. The loofahs are 100% compostable so when you are done with them, just cut them up and toss them in the compost. Who doesn't love a good loofah?!

Best of all, their large 11oz brick dish soap bars can replace 4 plastic bottles. You will also find scented and unscented options for the sensitive skin. With thousands of fantastic reviews, it's sure to be a hit in your home too! You know how much we love to clean here on The Eco Hub. 😜

Juturna's business model is one that encompasses sustainability in all facets: they are cruelty-free, 100% natural, organic, vegan, fair trade/woman-owned small business that supports other small businesses! And we are so delighted to have them with us on our sustainable journey!

They collaborate with like-minded small businesses and artists to produce high-quality, low-impact, and environmentally responsible goods.

They also make an impact by reducing the amount of packaging they use, always choosing the smallest box or envelope, using upcycled or 100% plastic-free and compostable packaging materials, and they "reuse the cardboard boxes that we get from suppliers and donations whenever possible".

I love their Plastic Coalition Store, which is a growing global alliance of individuals, organizations, businesses, and policymakers working toward a world free of plastic.

Marley's Monsters is super popular on Instagram and for good reason. They carry one of my top sustainable swaps, the UNpaper® towel. If you know me you know I dislike paper towels immensely. It's expensive, wasteful, and is killing old forests at alarming rates. Like its toilet paper counterpart! UNpaper® towels are so easy to use, you can buy them on a roll or a holder like you see in the photo below. They work the same way conventional paper towel works, but sans all the waste.

Founds by Sarah and based in Oregon, they hand make all of the items sold in the online zero waste store. Got kids? They've got you covered with their burp cloths, baby cloth wipes, and washcloths.

You will also find reusable cotton rounds, reusable sponges for cleaning, and even reusable coffee filters and with over 42,000 sales on Etsy, you can trust this is a good place to buy zero waste supplies.

I also really love their option to shop by your interest, whether that be the adventurer, the beauty enthusiast or the pet lover or the zero-waste newbie. They vet every single item they sell so you don't have to! Kind of like what I do here on The Eco Hub. 😍 They believe all positive changes start from ZERO"! As members of 1% For The Planet, they take issues like animal rights and racial justice seriously and that's reflected in all the items they carry!

8. The Refill Shoppe

To reduce or get rid of waste altogether, these Zero Waste Online Stores For Plastic Free Shopping are the perfect place to start your journey.Pin
Image: The Refill Shoppe

I get very excited at the concept of refill, I've talked about it many times here on The Hub and I knew it would become more mainstream as consumers demand more from brands, especially when it comes to all that plastic packaging. The Refill Shoppe makes it so easy to have their refill options delivered right to your door. All you need to do is order the item of your choice, when it's done, you send it back with the prepaid postage, they will wash and sanitize and reuse the container over and over. They are both a Certified B Corp and a member of 1% for the Planet.

9. Full Circle Home

This Certified B Corp makes zero waste online shopping SO easy. I am sure you have seen and heard of these guys before? They are carried in a lot of shops across Canada and the USA. I have used many of their cleaning products and most of them have lasted me more than 15 years. They are an innovative brand that offers a phenomenal range of sustainable products for you to choose from. Being "plastic-neutral" means that:

"for every ounce of plastic we use, we work with Plastic Bank® to recover and recycle the same amount of plastic that would otherwise enter our oceans".

I've rounded up the best zero waste online stores and shops, most of which are in Canada. For the ones that are not, I have included shipping information for you.

10. Kinsfolk

A selection of zero waste products. Pin
Image: Kinsfolk

A low waste online store that I love. I have quite a few items from Kinsfolk Shop. Including reusable cloth produce bags, perfect for grocery shopping and I really love their dustpan and brush, I mean all cleaning tools should always look this good!

Find a healthy selection of green goods from first aid to personal care to zero waste laundry options and even a zero waste starter kit for newbies. Their candles and linen spray are all made with sustainable ingredients and are so pretty for any eco-home.

Tiu and Rahul, the owners, have done such a great job at curating zero and low-waste items for the home. It's a very well-rounded package free shop that makes sustainable shopping so easy for everyone.

Based in Guelph Ontario, all their shipping is carbon neutral and plastic-free. All packages are sent in repurposed cardboard boxes or paper envelopes. Products are packed as flat as possible to conserve packaging materials and reduce waste.

To cut back on unnecessary paper waste, they do not include paper receipts or paper packing slips in your package unless you request it.

Kinsfolk Shop is proud to support Tree Canada as a Tree Friend.

The Better Farm Co. works with One Tree Planted a non-profit organization that's on a mission to make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees!

When you consider that "less than 11 percent of Canada’s plastics get recycled. The rest end up in our landfills, lakes, parks, and oceans, destroying ecosystems and leaching toxic chemicals", a reusable shopping bag is a no-brainer!

Green & Frugal carries a wide range of zero waste home essentials. Find plastic-free body care like zero waste lip balm and body butter, plus shampoo bars. They make a lot of their personal care products in small batches, even their toothpaste. All of their ingredients are ethically sourced and no fillers or harmful synthetics are added.

This plastic-free online shop's reusable section is fantastic offering everything you need for your kitchen, bathroom, and home. I've been using their body butter, it's simply divine, the orange and vanilla are my favorites, and the smell is so intoxicating. It's been a savior for my dry skin this winter. If you have not tried plastic-free toothpaste yet, I highly recommend giving it a go. The mint flavor is so good. I LOVE the fact that a lot of their skin and body care products come in reusable containers that you can refill. Reducing waste even further.

If you are a clean freak like me then you will love their laundry and dish soap block. They hand make them in-house using sustainably sourced ingredients. It's super concentrated (no added water like dish soap) and cuts grease very well. You only need to use a little bit, it will last at least a few months. Think about how much plastic you will be cutting back on.

Choosing the best alternatives to plastic

Staring your journey to a plastic-free life can be both exciting and frustrating. It's not going to happen overnight, in 85 Sustiabale Tips I outlined some of the most practical steps you can take to green your life. Change takes time and that is certainly the case when it comes to plastic-free living.

You can always choose reusable over single-use, which you probably already know. You also have the choice to pick better alternatives to plastic. Some of those include glass, stainless steel, silicone, cardboard, wood, bamboo, and natural fibres and fabrics.

The bottom line on online zero waste stores

Wow, this is an impressive list if I do say so myself. 20 years ago or even 10 years ago there was nowhere near this selection to choose from. This makes me so happy. So much of the time it's hard to find a low/zero waste alternative but with the explosion of online shopping we know have much better options than Amazon.
