Pucker up, ladies and gents! These zero waste lip balms are not only better for you but better for the planet, too. If you've made the switch to green beauty products and plastic-free shampoo bars then lip balm seems to be the next obvious swap, mostly because we apply it several times during the day.
Here at The Eco Hub, we are committed to finding the very best sustainable brands. We independently review everything we recommend. When you buy through our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission. Learn more here.
Shopping for a zero waste lip balm can be tricky- Here's what to look for:
You will not want to lick your lips when you consider what's hiding in some of your lip products. Ingredients like MICA, petroleum, mineral oil, and artificial colors and fragrances are linked to things like cancer and other potential health problems.
Like all skincare articles on The Eco Hub, certain criteria are taken into account when considering the clean beauty brands I feature. These criteria include:
1. Is it local?
Where is it made? How far does it have to travel to get to me?
2. Is it made of natural ingredients?
Does it only contain all-natural ingredients?
3. Is it certified organic?
Are the ingredients used certified organic? Is the company itself certified organic?
4. Is it vegan?
Is the product plant-based and made without any ingredients derived from animals or insects?
5. Is it cruelty-free?
Do they avoid testing their products on animals?
6. Palm oil-free?
Does the product contain palm oil?
7. Are ingredients sustainably sourced?
Does the company source its ingredients sustainably and ethically?
8. Does the company use environmentally-conscious packaging?
Is the product packaged using recyclable and/or compostable/zero waste friendly packaging? We call this Blue Beauty. Have you heard about it?
Top picks for zero waste lip balm
Lucky for us, lip balm is pretty easy to make from natural ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, olive oil, and beeswax. Many natural and organic lip balms can also be used on dry hands and elbows too, so it's a great multi-use product
1. EarthHero's zero waste lip balm
EarthHero carries a wide variety of sustainable lip balms including two of my favorite brands, Seed Phytonutrients and River Organics. Both are simply delicious.
With Seed Phytonutrients, you are getting a natural zero waste lip balm that is packed full of lip-loving ingredients like sunflower seed oil, beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter. This lip balm will leave your lips with a subtle, yet super moisturizing sheen. It comes in a paper tube, too!
All Seed Phytonutrient products are certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny. The brand supports its organic farmers by paying for 100% of their crop upfront, regardless of yield. This allows them to reinvest in their farms and plan for future harvests, protecting the future of organic farming.
If you are looking for a vegan zero waste lip balm, then look no further than River Organics. I've tried this one and I love it. What's even better is that you can choose to go bare or add a little tint to your pucker with any of their colors - rose gold, bare, or rouge. Made with cacao and mango butters, these balms are the bomb if you ask me!
All River Organics products are plastic-free, vegan, GMO-free, and palm-oil-free. Not only do they make these wonderful lip balms, but they also have a really fantastic collection of zero waste makeup.
EarthHero not only carries lip balms, but they also carry pretty much anything you need to create a natural and sustainable home, from eco-friendly pet products to outdoor gear and everything in between. You could call them a really good alternative to Amazon.
EarthHero is based in Boulder Colorado and was founded by Ryan Lewis, who says: "Our goal is to make buying responsibly second nature. We’re on a mission to make it normal to consume in a way that’s easier on the environment while meeting the convenience we’ve come to expect."
And they are really good at this! On their website, you will find in-depth information on each and every brand they sell (there are over 150). This information includes the product's sustainability features, its ingredients, and more. What I especially love is their sustainability logos — when you roll over any of them they break the information down even further.
EarthHero is a certified B Corp that also offers carbon-neutral shipping!
2. Three Acres coconut zero waste lip balm
I'm coconuts for these lip balms called Soft Kiss! I've been using this brand for quite some time and can report that this stuff really works. Some lip balms actually dry your lips out in the long run, but this is not the case with Three Acres. For scents, they have five delectable choices for you: grapefruit, lavender, wintergreen, and even non-scented.
The tubes are made of 90% post-consumer recycled cardboard and they're 100% recyclable. Their pure beeswax works in concert with fair trade shea and cocoa butter to provide natural hydration and lasting protection to keep your lips from drying out.
This is what they have to say about their business: "We create our products in our honey house located in the Eastern Townships where we live in harmony with nature, surrounded by birds and bees flying peacefully in the sky of the beautiful village of Dunham."
3. Elate Cosmetics Zero Waste Lip Balm
Elate's Better Balm in the bomb! I've been using and loving it for over 4 months now. It's a Lip Conditioner and multi-tasking lip balm that nourishes your lips with healthy, moisturizing ingredients and environmental protection–while adding a sheer tinted shine.
Infused with moisturizing, vegan ingredients such as castor oil, olive oil, and sunflower oil, as well as carrot root and rosehip oil. Carrot root oil is a sustainable antioxidant that builds up protection and pairs effectively with the vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E benefits of rosehip seed oil.
Better Balm Lip Conditioner is packaged in a recyclable glass jar with a compostable bamboo lid. Elate is really changing the game when it comes to green packaging and it's why they are featured in the zero waste makeup guide and the organic and natural foundations guide.
4. Net Zero Co's Zero Waste Lip Balm
Net Zero Co.'s tinted zero waste lip balm not only smells divine it makes your lips feel soft, smooth, and ready to be kissed. I've been using the Pina Colada and it makes me feel like I am on a vacay every time I apply it. It's packed full of beneficial botanicals like Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Candelilla Wax, and Cocoa Butter.
Each and everyone is hand-poured with love, and trust me, you will LOVE this plastic-free chapstick! It comes in a compostable cardboard tube and is a must-have in any eco diva's makeup bag! Oh, and you can also purchase these as a duo for a lower price.

They ship everything to you plastic-free and they also partner with Eden Reforestation Projects to help plant trees in environmentally and economically challenged countries around the world.
5. Wild Craft Care's zero waste salve
WildCraft Care is an iconic green beauty brand here in Canada. Not only do they carry a multi-purpose balm that can be used from your lips to your toes, but they also offer a range of skincare. Their body oil and natural and organic face moisturizer are by far at the top of my list for efficacy and ingredients. Their salve is cruelty-free and contains superhero ingredients like shea butter, calendula-infused sunflower oil, beeswax, and meadowfoam seed oil that are all certified organic.
Great for anyone in need of extra moisture and protection, it's ideal for dry and dehydrated skin and eczema. It comes in a metal tin that can be reused or recycled.
Wildcraft Care is based in Toronto and was founded by Laura Whitaker who handmakes all of these wonderful creations in small batches which are designed with fresh and organic ingredients.
6. Botany Barn organic zero waste lip balm
Botany Barn sells four flavors of eco-friendly lip balm: lime, rose, honey bee, vanilla bean, and cocoa mint. Okay, they all sound good enough to eat! They come in these really cute cardboard tubes that are easy to travel with. They are made with certified organic ingredients like cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, coconut oil, local honey, peppermint essential oil, mango butter, and local beeswax.
These lip balms are made in small batches to ensure top quality and freshness and feature only natural oils and scents. Botany Barn makes products that are good for us and the environment, adding:
"That means sourcing organic & sustainable ingredients, no artificial fragrance oils, no palm oil, and no excessive packaging. All of my products are handcrafted in small batches to ensure freshness, using 100% natural ingredients like clays, botanicals, vegetables, and other things you might find in your own kitchen or garden."
7. Plant Makeup's sustainable lip balm
Plant Makeup's waste-free lip balms come in plastic-free paperboard tubes with the cutest patterns on them. You can choose from a selection of flavors and tints, like strawberry, vanilla bean and red rose. You can also use these as a cheek highlight or even creamy eye shadow. They're made with plant-based, locally sourced ingredients that are GMO-free, all-natural, and handmade. Plus, all of the packaging is compostable.
Plant Makeup is the brainchild of Jess who describes herself like this:
"OK, so I'd admit I'm sort of nuts. I take risks. I am an artist. this has been my work since 2004. I love plants. I started with 'herbalism' and it evolved into this. If you put any of these items on your body you are interacting with nature. Plant makeup is interactive nature art to enhance our natural beauty. Because you're already beautiful."
8. etee's natural zero waste lip balm
If you want a JUMBO-sized sustainable lip balm, etee has you covered. Their lip balms come in two flavors: grapefruit and cocoa mint. I really like grapefruit; it's got a fresh scent and taste. It's made with organic coconut oil, organic cocoa butter, organic beeswax, and grapefruit essential oil.
With 12 grams (.42oz) of natural, moisturizing lip balm, you get nearly 3 times the typical 4.25 gram (.14oz) tubes you'd find at your local drug store—except without that nasty plastic tube! Instead, it's all housed in a biodegradable paper tube, which is good for you and great for our planet.
etee is another one-stop shop for all your eco-shopping needs. They carry refillable cleaning products, plus zero waste toothpaste and even plastic-free loofahs! No matter if you need a zero-waste kitchen or bathroom stuff, they've got it all! Even zero waste floss!
