The cleaning products we use should be…well….cleaning not cleaning AND adding harmful chemicals to the air we breathe in. Conventional cleaners come with warnings on the bottles for a reason! Have you ever thought about that? As it turns out many of the products we use to clean our homes are actually dirty!
Eco friendly cleaning products have come a long way in the last 10 years. I remember the first time I bought one, almost 20 years ago now. I wish I could remember the name. It definitely did not work as well as I hoped it would. That is simply not the case today. Natural cleaning products and the brands that make them are certainly improving the health of our homes.
It's fair to say that the world of natural cleaning is much more than just plant-based ingredients. Eco-conscious consumers are demanding more, we are looking for safe, clean cleaning products that work....minus all that plastic packaging. Oh, and they need to be ethical and sustainable too! OBVI!
Companies are answering the call and offering us eco friendly refillable cleaning products that work! I'll talk more about this trend a little later, so let's get to it!
The Best Eco Friendly Refillable Cleaning Products
1. The Unscented Co.
I've used pretty much all of The Unscented Co.'s cleaning products and recommend them all. This brand is committed to making it easier for you to shop for eco-friendly refillable cleaning products, giving us a huge reason to love their green mission even more.
For starters, all of their cleaning and zero waste products will arrive at our door in refillable containers. Second, if you are sensitive to any kind of scents, then this is the brand for you. Founder Anie says "we believe powerful cleaning can be free of fragrances and we could all be better for it."
The dish soap will keep your dishes and the planet squeaky clean. It's an effective formulation made with plant-based ingredients. It comes in a plastic bottle that you can either reuse or refill with one of their 4 or 10L refill boxes (which comes with a spout for ease of use).
The laundry detergent is tough on stains, color-safe, and can also be used with cold water. It's safe for HE and standard washers and comes in a bottle that is made from 25% post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR). It's fragrance and dye-free, and you can get 78 loads out of it! Whoa! When you run out, you can choose to refill it using either a 4L or 10L refill box.
All of their products are vegan and cruelty-free. The Unscented Co. is deeply committed to ingredient transparency, which makes it easier for the consumer to know what they are purchasing. Some of their products (soap bars) do contain RSPO-certified palm oil.
When you decide to buy take-home bulk cleaning products, you are helping to remove thousands of plastic bottles from the environment. Plus, switching to their bag-in-a-box refills for Laundry, Hand, and Dish Soap can reduce plastic use by at least 80%!
The dish and laundry tabs (which I love by the way) are packaged in recycled boxes with water-soluble pouches. And all of their bottles are made from plastic HDPE #2, which has good recycling rates. They also work closely with local Canadian suppliers and are B Corp certified.
When it comes to product packaging, their approach is reduction and eco-design from the very start. They are always rethinking designs and working with suppliers toward that goal.
I simply love the fact that all of their products are made with sustainably sourced, safe, biodegradable ingredients that are designed to be refilled again and again!
The at-home refill station kit is the best money can buy. It is a great option for starters and will look so fabulous in your home!
How it works: You simply go online, choose the items you want, and they will ship them to you. Refills come in 4L or 10L.
2. Less Waste Co.
I've been using two of their refillable cleaning products. The all-purpose cleaners are one of the best I have tried. It has a light, fresh scent, which I love. It removes dirt and oil spills perfectly. Some of the star ingredients include plant-based alcohol that works as a solvent and baking soda which helps to reduce smells.
The dish soap is super effective at removing stuck-on food, it's packed full of ingredients that you will recognize and ones that are Biodegradable too. I love the smell, it's Grapefruit Mandarin (same as the all-purpose cleaner) and it's simply lovely to have in my kitchen. These are some of the best zero waste cleaning products on the market.
How it works: Both products come in either a 500ML or 1L jar that you get when you order. There is a $1.50 deposit for the jar but you get that back when you place your next order. Currently, Less Wate Co. delivers to the Greater Toronto Area and is looking to expand. Looking for shampoo, shower gel, and hand sanitizer they got that too. Going natural is far from boring, you can keep the cute jars and use them for something else when you are done!
All of their products are vegan, cruelty-free, and palm-oil-free.
Less Waste Co. is a Toronto business run by three sisters, Pansy, Maggie, and Calla, who wanted to make a difference in the world by giving consumers an alternative to single-use plastic cleaning products. Their principles are based on trust, simplicity, diversity, and inclusion.
The Refillery Market is one of my favorite zero-waste stores in Canada. They provide consumers with refillable cleaning products, soap, detergents, and personal care items, like zero waste toothpaste. All package-free. WHOOT!
The sustainable cleaning alternatives come in the cutest mason jars. I've never met a mason jar I didn't love LOL! I collect them and probably have way too many.
Love the dish soap. You can buy it in ½ a gallon which will last you a few months, it's $35 which is very affordable in my opinion for what you are getting. The soap is vegan, cruelty-free, made in Canada, septic safe, and biodegrade! It's ultra-concentrated, a little will go a long way. You can read about the ingredients on the website. I love the fact that they disclose all of the ingredients in their products, which is not legally required in Canada for cleaning products.
The Refillery Market was founded by Koby, who was frustrated by the volume of plastic packaging cleaning products come in, so she decided to do something about it by offering a refillable cleaning alternative. Koby says "the best part of a zero-waste life is a little goes a long way." I couldn't agree more.
How it works: They break it down for you on their website:
"You choose the type of bottle you need: Pre-filled is a ready-to-use Boston round jar with a pump or sprayer. This option is best if you have NOT bought from us before and need a working vessel for your soap or other products, or if you need additional pump/spray bottles for your home."
"Or, buy a mason jar full of product (no pump) if you already own a sprayer or pump bottle. You can refill your existing pump bottle with a small jar of the product (236 ml), medium jar (473 ml), or large jar (945 ml). Your order will be delivered to your doorstep on the next delivery day. Once your order is received please be sure to wash the jar down with hot soapy water."
The Peeled Pantry is an online zero waste shop where waste-free is made easy. No matter what you need for your home, they've got it — from low waste toilet paper to natural cleaning products and even including a chic range of refillable cleaning products for your home.
Their cleaning and laundry zero waste refills come in glass jars and spray bottles that are easy to use and super effective for any messy task. All their cleaning products are refillable with two brands in this guide, Attitude Cleaning, and The Unscented Co.
The Peeled Pantry makes it easy for you to make informed choices on the items you bring into your home. Every product is carefully curated to reflect its mission of minimal packaging, environmental sustainability, and as much local sourcing as possible.
They work closely with local/Canadian businesses that also focus on low-waste manufacturing and products. They source all their items in bulk or cardboard boxes as much as possible. All of their liquid products can be purchased in reusable deposit bottles. When you are done with them, they take them back to clean and sanitize them so they are ready to reuse again!
I love their motto: "We believe refills should be as easy to use as products in their original store packaging. With our conveniently sized ready-to-use bottled products, you won’t need to fuss with pouring or refilling! We offer all our liquid products with either pump or sprayer caps, so you can just twist them open and use".
5. Eco & Amour
If you are even in the Toronto area and you are able to pop in, please do! This is possibly the cutest and most stocked eco-store you will find. Not to worry, you can find all of their goodies online too. Eco + Amour carries EVERYTHING and the kitchen sink when it comes to green products for the home. I have been introduced to some pretty innovative products thanks to them! Reusable cue-tips anyone?
When it comes to making cleaners that are better for mother earth and your health, female-founders Sarah and Laura (love them both so much) offer zero waste cleaning products that are tough on clean but gentle on the planet.
I've been using their dish soap, hand soap, and all-purpose cleaner. All of them are so good, no BS! Theirs is actually the best green all-purpose cleaner for my home. It's made right here in Toronto with naturally-derived fruit sugars and fast-acting enzymes to help tackle soils and spills. It has a lovely clear, fresh scent. You can use it on floors (even wood). glass, walls, in the bathroom, and even in the car.
The dish soap, like all their products, is palm-free, biodegradable, and tough on dirt, formulated with plant-based ingredients and organic essential oils, which leave the kitchen smelling so lovely.
Obsessed with the hand soap, its citrus scent comes from lemon and orange essential oils. Since we have to wash our hands too much these days #COVID, this is the perfect hand soap to get it done and keep those hands free of germs naturally.
How it works: When you buy the refill the price includes the packaging deposit. You can choose between the plastic pouch ($0.50 deposit) or a glass mason jar ($2). You get the deposits back when you return the packaging to the store. I suggest you purchase the BPA-free plastic pouches as they need fewer packing materials and won't break in transit.
6. PURE Bio
Their bulk cleaning products are super-concentrated so you don't have to use too much, which actually ends up saving you money. I've been using a free of their products and am impressed. The laundry detergent works really well to clean my clothes. I had a few towels that had minor satins n them and they were gone after using this. I also noticed there was less static in the dryer, I don't use dryer sheets or fabric softener. I do air-dry a lot of my clothes, it's way easier than you might think.
It has a light fresh scenes from essential oils and my clothes smell really lovely.
The kitchen and bathroom cleaner can be used throughout your home. I love this! You simply do not need a separate cleaner for each job in your home! This can be used from the kitchen to BBQ and bathtub! I love that it is so versatile. Again you do not need to use very much of it. Got line and grime in the shower? This will get rid of it!
Both products can be ordered for bulk-at-home cleaning. They are vegan and cruelty-free.
PURE Bio is another great Canadian brand founded in 2009 in Quebec. They are actually one of the first cleaning companies in Canada to offer bulk options directly to the consumer. In 2016, they were Climate Commitment Certified by Ecocert, which means they are working towards reducing their greenhouse gases in all facets of their business.
Looooove this Quebec company for these eco friendly refillable cleaning products. They have just introduced a two-liter bulk-to-go refill box which is the perfect alternative to single-use bottles, you get to buy your fav products with up to 80% less plastic. Gotta love that!
I love this diagram from their website showing exactly how many plastic bottles you save!
I was first introduced to Attitude's products a couple of years ago while researching products for an eco segment for CTV. I was instantly impressed. A lot of the time people find it hard to transition to greener cleaners because they don't look and feel the same as the ones they are used to. That is simply not the case with Attitude.
I have used all of their cleaning and laundry products, the list is too long to add here. Don't judge, I love to clean! All of them are super effective, made with supernatural ingredients, all made with EWG's strictest standards in mind: free of cancer-causing chemicals, mutagens endocrine disruptors, and other ingredients of concern.
Their products are also ECOLOGO® (no environmental contamination at every step) and PETA Certified, hypoallergenic, vegan, cruelty-free, and palm-oil-free.
Manufactured in Canada they have the strictest standards when it comes to sourcing ingredients and sustainable development principles, even their factory is designed with the environment in mind.
They also have an in-house lab which is unusual for a personal care company. It allows them to have full control over the ingredients, process, and quality.
Let's talk about their packaging. The refills come in a cardboard box that is FSC certified for forest stewardship. Inside the box is a plastic bag that can be recycled. You need to rinse the bag before you place it in the recycling bin. The whole bag with the top can go in the blue bin.
All their other products do come in plastic packaging, it is plastic #2 which has higher recycling rates as noted before. My recommendation is to go with the refill options they have. When you buy in bulk you will save a ton of cash. These guys basically have a really great Attitude when it comes to taking care of our homes and the planet. USE CANDICEB10 at check out for 10% off.
This small Canadian company was the first refillable cleaning product I used in my home. I met the founder Ashley at the Green Living Show and it was pretty much love at first sight. The branding was so on point and will suit any kitchen. But it was the products and the way they performed that really impressed me.
- The dish soap is sudsy and moisturizing and has the best scent!
- The hand soap is fresh and clean, I have a pump bottle in both bathrooms and the kitchen too. Hubby loves the smell too.
- The laundry detergent is by far one of my top picks in the category. It's got a delightful smell from sage and lavender and clean like a green champ!
All the products come in glass packaging. The Bare Home Community has diverted more than 62,347 bottles from landfills! 👏 At every stage of production sustainability and ethics are taken into account at The Bare Home.
Not only do these products replace their single-use counterparts, but they are also completely transparent, setting a new trend for information.
Made with safe ingredients that are vegan, cruelty-free, and palm-free that will actually make you look forward to cleaning. Use code Ecohub10 for 10% off.
Etee has one of the most innovative Eco Friendly Refillable Cleaning Products for your home. This plastic-free dish soap comes in a biodegradable pod that is made from beeswax and tree resin and is fully compostable. It's hand-made in Toronto with fair labor practices and ethical manufacturing.
Each pod is packed full of 100% plant-based ingredients. No nasties like SLS or sulfates here. And you can get a whopping 13.5oz out of 1 pod. Which would be the size of a typical bottle of soap you'd buy at the grocery store. It has a lovely citrus scent (they have an unscented version) which will leave your kitchen smelling so fresh. They actually partnered with scent guru Christine Chanter Botanicals.
It's super easy to use, just empty the contents of the pods into a mason jar, shake well and use! It's that simple! It is totally possible to clean your home and lower your carbon footprint!
You can buy 3,6 or 9 pods at a time. Etee carries a wide range of zero-waste essentials for your home and body and it's why they are on my list for the best online zero-waste stores. They even ship goods to you plastic-free using cellulose tape! Even their office is powered by renewable energy! They are fast becoming one of my top picks for eco-living in Canada.
Meliora means better in Latin and that's exactly what these products are, better for you, me, and the planet.
The premise is simple with thier just add water cleaning products. You simply add the pre-made tablet to their reusable spray bottle (you can also use your own bottle), then fill the bottle with warm water, the tablet will dissolve then you simply spray and clean.
I love the fact that it's one item that you can use pretty much anywhere in your home for cleaning walls, floors, and countertops, this plastic-free cleaning product is non-toxic and made with ingredients like organic coconut oil which helps to get rid of grit and grime.
Meliora is vegan, cruelty-free, organic, and palm-oil-free. Their B Corp Certification ensures that they have fair living wages for employees. Through partnerships with 1% For the Planet and Women’s Voices for the Earth, they commit 2% of their annual revenues to environmental and charitable nonprofits.
You can sign up for a subscription and have the cleaning tablets delivered right to your door when you need them! Every tablet eliminates the need for a new plastic bottle! I mean you've got to love that!
11. Public Goods
Public Goods is another really innovative cleaning brand. Their bottles are actually made from sugar cane which is a biodegradable alternative to single-use plastics. Even their toilet paper is sustainable as it's tree-free.
I love the sleek, minimalist look of these natural cleaning products. The multi-purpose surface cleaner is top-notch and can clean like a champ. Meses, check. Spills, check. Powerful plant-based ingredients, check! Made from coconut-derived active and scented with Jasmine essential oil, it's like cleaning in a meadow, oh and super effective too.
Their cleaning products use less power and are grey water-friendly, which means leftover water can be used to water plants.
They also offer refillable for all their cleaning products, You can purchase tubes which allow you to reuse the bottle and save about half the cost of the actual products.
The founder of Public Goods is originally from Montreal and looked to open a sustainable business early on in his carer, today Public Goods boats a huge selection of vegan, cruelty-free and organic items for your home and body. The cleaning products are not organic, and they do use RSPO-certified palm oil in their shampoo bars.
On every product page of the website, you will find details about how it's sustainable. Most of their products are made in the USA. They work with Eden Reforestation Project, when you become a member they donate to Eden.
Why use Eco Friendly Refillable Cleaning Products in Your Home?
Cleaning our homes should not come at the expense of our health or the planet. I am a firm believer that less is more and that is certainly the case when cleaners are concerned. You simply do not need separate cleaning products for every job in your home.
Take a close look at the cleaners hiding in your kitchen cabinet, look at the labels, are there warnings right on the bottle? Like this:
- Causes irreversible eye damage
- Causes skin irritation
- Prolonged or frequently repeated skin contact may cause allergic reactions in some individuals
- Vapors may irritate
- Harmful if swallowed
- Do not get in eyes or on clothing
- Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors
- Use only in well-ventilated
- Hazardous to humans and domestic animals
When you use products that have these types of warnings the chemicals can stay in the air, they can also enter our bodies through the skin or through ingestion of household dust and chemical residues left on dishes and cutlery.
So how do you know if your cleaners have toxic chemicals?
It’s not that easy, In Canada, there are no legal requirements for companies to warn us about the health and environmental hazards associated with long-term exposure to chemical ingredients in their cleaning products. Most of us are exposed to cleaning products and their residues at low levels every day and when you flush these cleaners down the drain, they have terrible consequences for aquatic life.
How to shop for Eco Friendly Refillable Cleaning Products?
Like with everything on The Eco Hub, I am looking for brands who walk the walk and talk the talk! Brands that are thinking about a circular economy, meaning they are thinking about what you are going to do with the items when you are done with it. Brands that manufacture and source ingredients ethically pay their workers a fair wage.
Ethical Criteria include:
- Corporate Responsibility
- Ethical sourcing
- natural or organic ingredients
- Environmentally-conscious packaging (plastic alternatives);
- Corporate responsibility
- Who can access and use this product?
- Equity and cost
- no animal testing or derivatives!
Learn more about our ethical criteria. It will give you the tools you need to make more sustainable choices.
Bottom line when it comes to Eco Friendly Refillable Cleaning Products
Keeping your home clean naturally is the first step to keeping it healthy. All of the brands I have chosen are doing great things in the world and are proving that you can have a sustainable business.
All of them give us options for safe cleaning products that work minus all that plastic packaging!
I absolutely see refillable cleaning products as the future of cleaning but I'd love to see them available in bog box shops. Hopefully, if we demand more of it, it will become a reality. In this case, I am going to say thank goodness for online shopping.
