What criteria do we use when choosing a non toxic mattress? 

Avoiding toxins in your home can seem like a daunting task. And mattresses are the culprit. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel here too. 

When it comes to conventional mattresses, the prime suspects are synthetic foams, flame retardants, formaldehyde-producing adhesives, and polyester or PVC vinyl covers. 

These materials are both unsustainable and pose a threat to our health. But unlike conventional clothing (fast fashion), which is laden with unwanted chemicals, traditional mattresses cannot be washed and must be left to off-gas the harmful chemicals they release once they get into our homes. 

If you think off-gassing is likely harmless because “how could it be allowed if it weren’t?” then you should check out what they allow in tampons and beauty products. 

So to avoid these toxic and unsustainable inputs, I look for mattresses made from more sustainable materials and fabrics.

I also consider the manufacturer’s sourcing practices and corporate responsibility to ensure I buy from brands that care about my well-being, the environment, and the people who make their products. Let's dive in a little more.

1. What materials and fabrics are used to make the mattress?

I always favor sustainable and environmentally friendly fabrics and materials for the fabric, which usually means natural options like organic cotton, hemp, jute, linen, and ethical wool.

Certifications like the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS),  the Organic Content Standard (OCS), and the USDA-Certified Organic certification are all good indicators that the textiles used are produced ethically and sustainably. For the perfect companion to some linen sheets and linen curtains too. 

Synthetic fabrics like modal, lyocell, and bamboo viscose are also acceptable when they are produced ethically and sustainably. Certifications from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Recycled Claim Standard will attest to that. 

As for materials, I look for other natural inputs, which in this case means ethically produced rubber or latex, sustainably harvested wood, and recycled steel coils.

The GOLS certification is excellent when it comes to rubber. As for wood, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification is a perfect point of reference for traceable and sustainably sourced wood products.

2. How are those fabrics and materials being ethically sourced?

It’s also essential that inputs be sourced ethically, from how they are produced to the people involved in making them. Reliable production methods and labor practices across the supply chain are crucial for more sustainable products. 

Materials and fabrics produced using verifiable organic standards are always preferable for the consumer and the environment. This also means a traceable supply chain so we know exactly where they come from. 

Chemical use is a big issue concerning mattresses, so production methods that account for this are crucial. Certifications like OEKO-TEX® 100, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) certification, and the EU Ecolabel indicate that brands avoid harmful chemicals and dyes.

It’s also super important that workers are ensured a fair wage and safe working conditions. The Fair Trade certification is exemplary, providing ethical labor standards and sustainable sourcing practices.  

3. What's the brand's corporate responsibility all about?

Brands that provide sustainable shipping, carbon offsets, employee programs, regenerative agriculture, and other initiatives that benefit the planet and the communities they work in are also at the top of my list.

So I always look for products made by companies who go above and beyond in this area; to reduce their impact on the planet, and contribute to a better world for everyone.

Final Thoughts on non toxic mattresses

Getting a better night’s sleep might be a little tricky sometimes, but these brands have your back when reaching for a safer mattress. There is no need to worry about harmful chemicals, unsustainable materials, or labor standards here!
