Sustainable Eco-Friendly Skincare Brands We 💚
Before you head out to shop for clean beauty, it's good to keep a few things in mind! At the end of this post, we've got some great resources on why switching to greener skincare is better for you. We also cover our beauty criteria, which provides you with lots of information to make more informed choices that come with better ingredients and better packaging. And now the GOOD stuff...
1. The Eco Alchemist
The Eco Alchemist is a revolutionary brand in Canada known for their staunch commitment to environmental stewardship and wellness. They are the country's first licensed company to display the Palm Oil Free Certification Trademark on all its products.
The brand was founded by Terri Kirkham, a holistic nutritionist and cosmetic formulator, who was driven to bring certified palm oil-free products to the Canadian marketplace.
Their skincare line boasts of waterless cleansers, available as ultra-moisturizing facial cleansing bars or innovative powder-to-foam facial cleansers. These concentrated products have impressive longevity, with some customers reportedly using their first bottle of the powdered cleanser even a year later.
The brand also offers powdered facial masks that come in compostable packaging. Available in four varieties, these masks are filled with skin-loving ingredients such as coconut milk, prebiotics, and vitamin C, to name a few. Just add water and enjoy a luxurious, eco-friendly pampering session at home.
The Eco Alchemist's facial oils are another unique offering. The range includes their award winning Bakuchiol + Calendula Facial Oil, a bio-retinol blend for beautifully aging skin, the Blueberry + Cucumber Seed Facial Oil for all skin types, and the Abyssinian + Copaiba Resin for acne-prone & sensitive skin types. These oils are refillable, encouraging customers to reuse the dropper top from their previous order, thus reducing waste.
Their skincare bundle is a perfect starter kit, including a powdered facial cleanser, facial serum, choice of facial oil, and choice of powdered facial mask. The brand's award winning deodorant formula, free from baking soda and synthetic fragrance, are also becoming a customer favorite.
Moving on to hair care, The Eco Alchemist offers Canada's first and only certified palm oil-free shampoo bars. These bars are pH balanced for optimal hair and scalp health and are free from sulfates. They produce a luxurious, creamy lather and contain herbal ingredients like matcha, Brahmi, and activated charcoal.
Each bar contains plant-based proteins, hair-loving oils, vitamins, and shine enhancers. For instance, their "Smooth Operator" bar features quinoa protein, vitamin B5, orange fruit extract, and smoothing pequi fruit oil, giving off a sweet, energizing scent of vanilla and orange.
The brand also caters to specific hair and scalp needs, like their "Problem Solver" bar, perfect for dry, flaky, or oily scalps. Even the fragrances used are natural and offer an unscented line of products, "Non-Scents."
Adding to their eco-friendly ethos, the bars pair perfectly with reclaimed wood soap dishes handcrafted by the founder’s father, a carpenter who saves wood from the landfill to create these dishes. The Eco Alchemist also offers a Yuzu & Magnesium dry shampoo in a compostable shaker tube.

4. Blissoma
Blissoma is a holistic, botanical skincare brand founded by Julie Longyear, a herbal chemist and green beauty activist specializing in compassionate care for sensitive skin, acne, rosacea, and other skin concerns. A holistic approach means that the brand cares about its impact on the whole person and planet.
Blissoma products contain organic plant nutrition that deeply supports and balances the skin. And they are all made without irritating synthetic ingredients that can cause skin flares for sensitive people. Months of in-depth research go into each new recipe to ensure it solves a specific problem.
The line offers a complete range of cleansers, toners, moisturizers, serums, oils, and more which are used by over 200 estheticians in professional skincare treatments. One of their best-selling and most highly-rated products is Free, a Rejuvenating Herbal Gel Cleanser + Makeup Remover.
It is designed for ultra-sensitive skin and is suitable for all skin types and ages. It has won 2 awards and customers love and swear by it because it is gentle, effective, and does not dry out the skin. Some customers even reported seeing reduced redness and softer, more supple skin!
Blissoma is betting on regenerative agriculture to source its ingredients, favoring ingredients sourced from farms that are not only organic but also grown using more sustainable regenerative practices. About 30% of their herbs are sourced farm-direct from regenerative, organic farms like La Colina Linda in Illinois and Oshala Farm in Oregon.
As they work to source more and more ingredients from regenerative farms, ingredients may no longer carry organic certifications but would still be organically farmed.
All Blissoma products are vegan and Certified Cruelty-Free by the Leaping Bunny program. Some of their products contain palm oil, but they try to avoid it wherever possible and reformulated their bar soaps a few years ago using cocoa butter rather than palm oil.
In manufacturing, the Blissoma herbal production studio receives 80% of its electrical power from a rooftop solar array. It is lit using energy-conserving LED lights which use a fraction of the power of fluorescents. Herb waste from their manufacturing is also composted locally, and in 2022 they composted over 250 lbs of used herbs.
For packaging, recyclable aluminum and glass are made from recycled materials. Boxes are printed on Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified sustainable paperboard and manufactured in a wind-powered facility. They also make sure to reuse boxes and packaging material where possible and to recycle paper, cardboard, plastics, and metals used at their facility.

14. Plaine Products
We tried the citrus scented face wash – it smells good and feels gentle and cleansing without being too harsh or stripping. It doesn’t lather much but leaves skin feeling clean. Sadly if you have hyper sensitive skin like I do this might not be the best fit for you. However, if your skin isn’t easily irritated you may want to give this a try.
The green tea toner is noticeably fragrant but not too strong. It is designed to soothe irritated skin and to shrink pores without any harsh ingredients. It didn’t leave hyper sensitive skin feeling any discomfort after use.
This moisturizer feels great going on and smells really lovely. So much so that I looked forward to putting it on after cleansing. Sadly it did cause some irritation to hyper sensitive skin however, it seems as though this might be from the natural fragrance because this product otherwise feels super delightful.
We also tried their beauty oil, which is designed for us on hair, face and body. It feels rich, smells great and could make a perfect addition to any self-care routine.
Certified B Corp Plaine Products boasts several certifications, including Leaping Bunny, PETA, and 1% For The Planet. The carbon-neutral company exclusively uses recycled materials for shipping and offers their products in refillable, BPA-free aluminum bottles. Like many sustainable brands, Plaine uses plastic only for their pumps. Customers are encouraged to retain their first pump and reuse it with future product refill.

Why consider sustainable skincare brands?
The cosmetics (and personal care products) industry is the least regulated among consumer products. And conventional manufacturers have not taken it upon themselves to err on caution. Quite the contrary.
According to EWG, “since 2009, 595 cosmetics manufacturers have reported using 88 chemicals, in more than 73,000 products, that have been linked to cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm”. This includes chemicals like formaldehyde (used in embalming fluid and a known carcinogenic), methylene glycol, mercury, phthalates, parabens, PFAS, and more — all of which are banned by the European Union.
Plus, you’d think that after decades of defending the use of all sorts of stuff on our faces and bodies, conventional beauty brands would’ve figured out how to stop aging by now. Instead, we have observed over time that while many of the undesirable chemicals and contaminants found in conventional beauty and personal care products may not pose a high risk to our health, exposure to some of these chemicals and contaminants is linked to severe health issues like cancer.
We don’t think it wise to use these products on faces, skin, and bodies.
That’s why we prefer sustainable skincare brands that make their stuff without harmful or potentially harmful ingredients, just for starters. And if you are concerned about costs, like several of the brands featured here, there are also affordable skincare options worth considering.
Things to look for while shopping sustainable skincare brands
Let’s look at what to consider in searching for more sustainable skincare brands.
When searching for any beauty products, whether we're looking for blue beauty or sustainable men's skincare brands, we always consider our clean beauty criteria to avoid any greenwashing.
Good Ingredients: Here, we look to avoid any potentially harmful ingredients commonly found in skincare products with the help of our handy list of 18 ingredients to avoid in skincare and reputable references from the likes of EWG and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. We’re not looking for the most sustainable skincare brands but for brands trying to offer better options.
Vegan: For the vegans among us, we also look out for products that contain any ingredients derived from animals or insects such as beeswax, honey, milk, or cochineal bugs (also referred to as carmine, or carbonic acid). Many green beauty brands are vegan now so don’t fret and consider some vegan shampoo bars if needed!
Cruelty-free: Products tested on animals are a major no-no and it’s now very easy to avoid them. The cruelty-free certification program by Leaping Bunny is a great way of checking for this.
Palm-oil free: This is a no-go for us. It is pervasively linked to deforestation, threatens wildlife, and causes several other severe social and environmental issues. We try to avoid it wherever possible.
Sustainable Sourcing: Similarly, we want to know where all of the ingredients in the products come from and how they are produced. Sustainable production methods and ethical working conditions throughout the supply chain is the only thing to do. Brands that are transparent and share information on sourcing are definitely at the top of our list.
Better packaging: Sustainable packaging is crucial, particularly in the beauty industry, which generates an estimated 120 billion units of packaging per year. We look for brands offering refills, take-back programs, or types of plastic that can be recycled.
These criteria are a guideline. We do our best to find the best brands to share with you. There are no perfect criteria and no perfect brand, but lots are doing great things!
A final word on sustainable skincare brands
Finding the right skincare brands can be a struggle, and adding the sustainability component to things doesn’t help, but we think these sustainable skincare brands are worth a try. Their products are made with both our well-being in mind and that of our planet, which we can always stand behind.
If you’ve ever considered creating a zero waste bathroom altogether, we can help with that too, and don’t hesitate to drop by the brand directory for everything from green beauty brands to home goods and more sustainable living essentials.
