There is much to consider when choosing laundry detergent sheets over liquid or powder detergents. It's important to know what to look for where ingredients are concerned, especially PVA, a type of plastic used to bind the sheets together.
At the end of this article, we've got comprehensive guides on why making the switch to sheets is a more sustainable option, PLUS how we chose these eco-laundry detergent sheets and how to use these sheets. And if you need a really good natural laundry booster, watch the video below!
SuperBee's Hexawash offers a fragrance-free, simple way to clean clothes, eliminating the need for measuring and avoiding harsh chemicals. It effectively destroys odors and leaves clothes feeling fresh and crisp.
The Hexawash, utilizing magnesium's power, is certified/tested for up to 300 washes as a zero-waste laundry detergent alternative. The reusable organic cotton pouch and magnesium pellets can be used as garden fertilizer after their laundry ends.
If you prefer scented clothing, SuperBee suggests adding a few drops of essential oils to dryer balls during the drying process. Alternatively, old woolen socks and tennis balls can be repurposed for those without dryer balls, or a spritzer bottle can be used for line drying.
In 2016, Australian-born Antoinette Jackson founded SuperBee Wax Wraps in Northern Thailand, inspired to combat single-use plastic. After perfecting her beeswax wrap formula, her enterprise now thrives in Thailand, valuing its local team highly. Antoinette's ethos centers on community, environmental responsibility, and innovation
Review:Our experience with the Hexawash was highly positive. We soaked it in water for 15-20 minutes during the first wash, as recommended, and achieved excellent results. For subsequent loads, we simply placed the Hexawash in the washer, added clothes, and enjoyed similarly flawless outcomes. Hanging it to dry after use, we appreciate this plastic-free detergent option.

Review: The sheets dissolve instantly, whether you’re using hot or cold water, making them safe for all my laundry needs – from darks to whites.
The process is a breeze. All I have to do is toss them into my washing machine, and they’re good to go. These sheets are designed to tackle tough stains without using the harmful chemicals often found in traditional detergents. Depending on the size and soil level of my laundry loads, I use the following:
- 1 sheet for medium loads (that’s around half a drum full),
- 2 sheets for large loads (about ¾ of a drum), and
- 3 sheets for heavily soiled or extra large loads.
I’ve been genuinely impressed with the results. I washed a white face towel stained with waterproof mascara, which came out perfectly white again. I’ve also used them for my husband’s work shirts, which’ve come out spotless.
Additionally, these sheets were a lifesaver on a recent trip to Greece. They were so lightweight, which made packing a breeze. And whether we were machine washing or hand washing, they proved highly effective for cleaning our clothes.
3. Earth Breeze
We all want laundry detergent that’s stain-fighting, odor-crushing, effective, and natural and that’s what you’ll get with Earth Breeze’s laundry detergent sheets.
Their go-to formula is free of artificial dyes, phosphates, phthalates, and bleach. Instead, they use stain-busting enzymes that are effective on delicates, and good for all fabrics, both natural and synthetic. You can even use them to hand wash!
One package comes with 30 sheets, about 60 loads making is a budget-friendly option. You can also subscribe and have your detergent delivered to your door hassle-free. You can cancel your subscription at any time.
I’ve been using these sheets for about two months now and do like the scent and overall cleaning power. If you are sensitive to scent then go with the unscented version.
I didn’t see any residue or undissolved pieces of the sheet left in the washer or on my clothes, which is a bonus for me! For larger loads, I recommend using one full sheet.
If you have sensitive skin, I highly recommend you try these. One load will cost you about .33 cents, but with the subscription, that drops to about .20 cents per load.
- Safe to use in high-efficiency washers
- Good for front loader and top loader
- Good in hot or cold water
- Can last up to 18 months stored in a cool dry place

Why consider switching to laundry detergent sheets?
For starters, they are lightweight and compact which means they are so much easier to use and store.
They also answer a common issue when it comes to zero-waste cleaning products like laundry detergent or dishwasher liquid: just how much of it to use at a time? Regardless of whether or not we are using natural cleaning products, this is an issue because using more of a product does not necessarily result in a greater clean. It’s really more like pouring money down the drain.
Alternatively, pre-measured options like eco laundry detergent sheets and zero waste dishwasher tablets offer a pre-portioned alternative that is simple to use and helps avoid any waste associated with measuring the product.
Best of all, the laundry detergent sheet brands we are sharing with you here use safer ingredients and sustainable packaging that can be composted or recycled.
And don’t let their lightweight and compact size fool you. Like eco-friendly dishwasher tablets, laundry detergent sheets are concentrated and remain just as effective as their counterparts. Rest assured, we have no interest in misleading you by offering only the best laundry detergent sheets reviews. These products actually work.
How do we choose eco laundry detergent sheets brands?
From biodegradable laundry detergent to eco laundry detergent sheets, when it comes to any of the cleaners we use to wash our clothing, companies are not obligated to disclose the ingredients they use to make these products.
We take all of the following into account for all the brands we feature here on The Hub:
Good ingredients: Ingredients are super important when it comes to green cleaning products. That's why we have a list of 14 toxic ingredients commonly found in cleaning products that we use for reference.
In laundry detergents, we look to steer clear of things like 1-4 dioxane, MEA/DEA/TEA, formaldehyde, benzyl acetate, nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), ammonium sulfate, fragrance/parfum, triclosan, coal tar dyes, phosphates, SLS and SLES, trisodium nitrilotriacetate, and quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats).
We also look for monoethanolamine, phthalates, optical brightness, and bleach. Instead, we choose brands that offer biodegradable, septic-safe formulations without these harmful ingredients.
A word on Polyvinyl alcohol, also known as PVA, PVOH, and PVAL. This ingredient is typically referred to as a biodegradable polymer, it’s basically a binding agent that holds the sheets together! Bad news, it’s a type of plastic and even though is dissolvable, it’s not biodegradable. There are concerns with PVA that it can leave behind microplastics. I still feel these are a better alternative to the large plastic jugs! Ultimately the decision is up to you. We took a deep dive into WHAT IS PVA? I highly recommend you give it a read!
Vegan: We favor products that have ZERO animal ingredients or derivatives.
Cruelty-free: Animal testing is archaic, and we do not support brands who test their products on animals. We also consult the ingredients list for materials derived from animals.
We feature brands and products that use milk, beeswax, and wool, but we always make sure they are done as ethically as possible. If you are concerned about this, we note which products are vegan-friendly and which are not.
Palm oil-free: Palm oil is quite taxing on the communities where it is produced. With ethics and sourcing issues that are still very tenuous and very present, I try to avoid them wherever possible.
Sustainably sourced: We also consider ethical sourcing practices. This refers to how the materials and ingredients used in their products are made, under what conditions, and where they are produced.
We try to support brands who make the effort to source ingredients as ethically as possible from suppliers located as near to them as possible. Some brands trace back the origin of the ingredients they use and share this information on their website.
Better packaging: Packaging is a huge deal for eco-friendly cleaning products because we are drowning our oceans and ecosystems in plastics – the preferred packaging material.
That’s why some choose eco-friendly refillable cleaning products such as zero-waste dish soap or hand soap. And thank goodness for these alternatives because, at this rate, plastics are due to outweigh fish in the ocean by 2050.
Regarding packaging options, we favor products that come in compostable or reusable packaging wherever possible. Recyclable packaging is fine too, where it will be recycled. Things like glass, cardboard, and aluminum are far more likely to be recycled than plastics.
Where plastics are concerned, they are difficult to avoid (not here, though!!). If you are forced to buy products packaged in plastic, make sure it is easily recyclable (polyethylene terephthalate, aka PET) and follow your local recycling center’s instructions on properly recycling.
If this isn’t done properly, plastic containers are even less likely to be recycled, where only 5-6% of plastics are recycled in the US, and only 9% are recycled in Canada. (Though rudely awakening, these stats do not mean we shouldn’t bother trying to recycle our plastics at all!!!)
How to use laundry sheets
It’s super simple to use laundry detergent sheets, and all of these brands offer instructions on using their product. For front-loading machines, it seems like the best practice is just to pop your laundry into the washer and place the sheet(s) on top of your garments. Place the sheet at the bottom for top-loading machines, then add clothes.
If you think the load is particularly dirty, check the box for instructions on the number of sheets to use. Where loads are smaller, it is possible to cut the sheet accordingly, but I would check the box for instructions there as well.
A final word on laundry detergent sheets
So, what are the best laundry detergent sheets, you ask? Well, this type of thing always depends on your preferences and needs, but all of the laundry detergent sheet brands here are worth considering.
