Why consider switching to laundry detergent sheets?
If you’re still on the fence about these or are wondering why you should consider switching to laundry detergent sheets at all… Well, they bring with them many benefits that might just make them your new favorite solution for natural laundry detergent. For starters, they are lightweight and compact which means they are so much easier to use and store.
They also answer a common issue when it comes to cleaning products like laundry detergent or dishwasher liquid: just how much of it to use at a time? Regardless of whether or not we are using natural cleaning products, this is an issue because using more of a product does not necessarily result in a greater clean. It’s really more like pouring money down the drain.
Alternatively, pre-measured options like eco laundry detergent sheets and zero waste dishwasher tablets offer a pre-portioned alternative that is simple to use and helps avoid any waste associated with measuring the product.
Best of all, the laundry detergent sheet brands we are sharing with you here use safer ingredients and sustainable packaging that can be composted or recycled. So, if you’re looking for zero waste cleaning products, come along with us for some of the best zero waste laundry sheets out there.
And don’t let their lightweight and compact size fool you. Like eco-friendly dishwasher tablets, laundry detergent sheets are concentrated and remain just as effective as their counterparts. Rest assured, we have no interest in misleading you by offering only the best laundry detergent sheets reviews. These products actually work.
Even if you aren’t going zero waste, eco-friendly laundry detergent sheets really offer such a simple way to reduce our environmental footprint without sacrificing on clean.
Choosing eco laundry detergent sheets can be tricky, here’s what we look for:
From biodegradable laundry detergent to eco laundry detergent sheets, when it comes to any of the cleaners we use to wash our clothing, companies are under no obligation to disclose the ingredients they use to make these products. Pretty insane right?!
That’s why we recommend starting by supporting brands that do disclose the ingredients they use while considering these ethical criteria:
Looking at corporate responsibility is a great way of avoiding greenwashing. Here we consider every aspect of the brand’s business model. Do they support and invest in their workforce beyond what is customary? Do they work with nonprofits and charities to help people in need? Do they tackle any environmental issues? Do they take responsibility for their carbon footprint? Are they a B-certified corporation? Practices like this offer great insight into a company’s values but that’s not all.
We also consider ethical sourcing practices. This refers to how the materials and ingredients used in their products are made, under what conditions, and where they are produced. We try to support brands who make the effort to source ingredients as ethically as possible, from suppliers located as near to them as possible. Some brands trace back the origin of all of the ingredients they use and share this information right on their website.
Natural or organic ingredients
We also consider the ingredients themselves. Ingredients are super important when it comes to green cleaning products. That's why we have a list of 14 toxic ingredients commonly found in cleaning products which we use for reference.
In laundry detergents, we look to steer clear of things like 1-4 dioxane, MEA/DEA/TEA, formaldehyde, benzyl acetate, nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), ammonium sulfate, fragrance/parfum, triclosan, coal tar dyes, phosphates, SLS and SLES, trisodium nitrilotriacetate, and quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats). We also look out for monoethanolamine, phthalates, optical brightness, and bleach. Instead, we choose brands that offer biodegradable, septic-safe formulations without any of these harmful ingredients.
Environmentally-conscious packaging (plastic alternatives)
Packaging is a huge deal when it comes to eco-friendly cleaning products because we are drowning our oceans and ecosystems in plastics – the preferred material for packaging of all sorts.
That’s why some choose to go with eco-friendly refillable cleaning products such as zero waste dish soap or hand soap. And thank goodness for these alternatives because, at this rate, plastics are due to outweigh fish in the ocean by 2050.
In terms of packaging options, we favor products that come in compostable or reusable packaging wherever possible. Recyclable packaging is fine too, where it will actually be recycled. Things like glass, cardboard, and aluminum are far more likely to be recycled than plastics.
Where plastics are concerned, they are very difficult to avoid (not here though!!). If you are forced to buy products packaged in plastic make sure it is easily recyclable plastic (polyethylene terephthalate aka PET) and follow your local recycling center’s instructions on how to recycle properly.
If this isn’t done properly, plastic containers are even less likely to be recycled, where only a measly 5-6% of plastics are actually recycled in the US, and only 9% are recycled in Canada. (Though rudely awakening, these stats do not mean we shouldn’t bother trying to recycle our plastics at all!!!)
In order to create real sweeping change when it comes to the way we live, sustainable alternatives must work and be made accessible to people from all walks of life and backgrounds. We look for brands that make this possible for as many people as possible. Here, we mainly consider cost, but sensitivities like allergies too. When it comes to green beauty products we’d also consider complexion.
no animal testing or derivatives!
Animal testing is archaic and we do not support brands who test their products on animals. We also consult the ingredients list for materials derived from animals. We do feature brands and products that use things like milk, beeswax, and wool but we always make sure it is done as ethically as possible. If this is something you are concerned about, we make note of which products are vegan friendly and which are not.

How to use laundry sheets
It’s super simple to use laundry detergent sheets and all of these brands offer instructions on how to use their product. For front-loading machines, it seems like the best practice is to just pop your laundry into the washer and place the sheet(s) on top of your garments. For top-loading machines, place the sheet at the bottom, then add clothes.
If you think the load is particularly dirty check the box for instructions for the number of sheets to use. Where loads are smaller it is possible to cut the sheet accordingly but I would check the box for instructions there as well.
