How to Pick Sustainable Clothing Brands
Living more sustainably can be challenging, there is so much to know when it comes to figuring out whether a brand is sustainable or not. From fabrics to waste the fashion industry has a massive impact on the planet and although it's impossible for any brand to be 100% sustainable, all of these brands are doing a really great job coming pretty close.
I've got a ton of fashion resources for you to browse. And of course a really compressive breakdown on what ethical and sustainable fashion actually is. Fast fashion is a major fashion faux, it's why we see more and more people turning to slow fashion as they look to live more mindfully.
Like with our fashion criteria, we are always looking for brands that are taking the following into account:
Fabrics: What type of natural materials are used? Are they natural, like hemp, jute, organic cotton, modal, etc? Where are the fabrics from? Are they sourced responsibly? Are there third-party certifications in place? Some certifications to look for: B-Corp, Fairtrade, OEKO-Tex 100, Global Recycle Standard (GRS), Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP). I've noted this for each of the brands above as well.
Corporate Responsibility: What is the brand doing to reduce waste? Are they in touch with the factories that make their clothes, especially if they are in another country? Are they looking for ways to reduce water or chemical use? How transparent is the brand? Do they give back?
Ethical sourcing: Where and how are they sourcing their materials? Are they aware of their supply chain? Are the workers paid a fair living wage? Do they work in a safe environment? Are there programs in place to help them? Certifications: B-Corp, Fair Trade, WRAP, BSCI, SA8000, and Fair Wear Foundation.
Environmentally-conscious packaging (plastic alternatives): how are the clothes shipped to you? What kind of packing do they use?
Inclusivity, equity, and cost: do they represent BIPOC in their marketing campaigns? Are they size-inclusive?
These are just some brands, there are a ton more and I will be updating this list all the time. If you have a fav brand, please share it in the comments below.
If you found this post helpful, please help someone by sharing this article – Sharing is caring 🙂 ! And for more awesome green brands, make sure to browse the brand directory.

(My only difference is I like a #PlasticFreeCloset and not just during #PlasticFreeJuly) I truly appreciate you for creating this list. Working with LA Relaxed / Vector right now on a Girls Design Tomorrow mentorship program making a sustainable t-shirt. Now we can manifest making it on to your list in the future!!!
